Some Ogoni men and women from Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State staged a protest on Sunday in Eleme to express their opposition to the planned resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland.
The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions, voiced concerns over the environmental degradation and health challenges that have affected their communities due to past oil activities.
They vowed to resist any attempt to restart oil operations in Ogoniland without proper environmental remediation, compensation, and consultation with the people.
The demonstration comes amid growing tensions surrounding discussions on oil resumption in the area, decades after production was halted following agitations led by late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP).
