President Bola Tinubu on Friday hosted former state governors elected in 1999 at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in what is seen as part of ongoing consultations with key political stakeholders. Notably absent from the gathering was former Rivers State governor, Peter Odili.
The delegation, comprising members of the 1999 class of governors who assumed office at the onset of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, was led by former Delta State governor James Ibori.
While the agenda of the closed-door meeting was not made public, the session is believed to be part of Tinubu’s broader effort to consolidate political alliances ahead of major national decisions.
Presidential aide Dada Olusegun confirmed the meeting via a post on his verified X handle. The 1999 governors are regarded as influential figures in Nigeria’s democratic development, having played pivotal roles in the country’s political evolution over the past 25 years.
