The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council has issued a directive prohibiting all commercial activities and unauthorised structures within two meters of public roads and drainage paths across the area.
The announcement, signed by the Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, and released on Thursday in Rumuodomaya, states that the measure takes immediate effect and applies to traders, transport operators, business owners, and residents.
According to the Council, the enforcement aims to curb road obstruction, illegal encroachment, and safety hazards, while ensuring the protection of public right-of-way and the general well-being of the public.
Market leaders, motor park unions, landlords, and other community stakeholders have been ordered to ensure compliance in their areas. Landlords are also expected to remove or cause the removal of any illegal attachments or extensions encroaching on road setbacks.
The Council warned that defaulters risk confiscation of goods, demolition of structures, sealing of premises, arrest, and prosecution in line with existing local bylaws.
A seven-day grace period has been granted for voluntary compliance, after which the Council’s environmental sanitation and traffic task force will begin full enforcement on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
Hon. Worlu reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to maintaining order, improving aesthetics, and safeguarding lives and property within Obio/Akpor.
