The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has commenced the first phase of distribution of electricity transformers to selected communities across the LGA, in a bid to improve power supply and enhance residents’ quality of life.
The official distribution ceremony took place at the council headquarters and was presided over by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Dr. Joyce Nyeche, who represented the council chairman.
Addressing community leaders and beneficiaries, Dr. Nyeche said the initiative underscored the administration’s firm commitment to infrastructural development and the welfare of the people. She described access to electricity as a basic social amenity and a constitutional right, stressing that no community should be left in darkness.
She noted that the project aligns with the council’s ARISE Agenda, where the “I” represents Infrastructure, adding that the chairman is determined to deliver tangible dividends of democracy to the people of Obio/Akpor.
Earlier, the Secretary of the Local Government, Dr. Kelvin Akani, explained that the decision to distribute transformers followed numerous applications from communities experiencing epileptic power supply and prolonged outages.
Dr. Akani disclosed that about ten communities were selected for the first phase of the project, with priority given to areas that had been without electricity for extended periods, those with overloaded transformers, and communities with faulty equipment.
In his remarks, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Victor Wokeh, described the exercise as the first phase of a broader intervention, urging beneficiary communities to safeguard and properly maintain government property within their domains.
Speaking on behalf of the benefiting communities, HRH Eze Allwell A. D. Owhonda, JP, Eze Oha Okoro III, the Paramount Ruler of Nyewe-Eli Okoro Clan, expressed appreciation to the council chairman for fulfilling his promise.
