The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council has commenced the demolition of illegal structures and shanties along the Obiri-Ikwerre axis as part of efforts to restore order and improve public safety in the area.
The exercise is aimed at tackling the increasing rate of unauthorized construction across the local government, particularly in areas considered high-risk for residents and commuters.
According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Goodluck Nsirim, the council noted that locations such as Obiri-Ikwerre, Choba Junction, and Rumuorlumeni have witnessed a surge in illegal structures in recent months. Many of these buildings, the council said, are situated in unsafe zones, posing environmental hazards and security concerns.
The council explained that the demolition follows months of public sensitization, media announcements, and stakeholder engagements designed to inform residents about the dangers of erecting illegal structures.
Authorities also revealed that multiple notices had been issued to affected occupants over a two-month period, clearly outlining the risks and providing deadlines for voluntary removal before enforcement began.
The ongoing demolition started in Obiri-Ikwerre and is expected to extend to other identified hotspots, including Choba Junction, Rumuola, and the Rumuorlumeni axis, where similar encroachments persist.
The council emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader plan to create a cleaner, safer, and more organised environment, while also fostering conditions that support business growth and improved living standards across Obio/Akpor.
