The Obidient Movement has condemned Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, describing him as a threat to national unity over a reported statement warning former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, not to visit the state without prior notice.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Nana Kazaure, the movement expressed concern over a circulating video in which the governor allegedly made the threat.
Kazaure warned that Governor Okpebholo should be held accountable if anything happens to Obi, stressing that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees all citizens the right to move freely within the country.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees the right of every Nigerian to move freely and reside in any part of the country,” the statement read.
She described the governor’s comment as not only unconstitutional but also part of a “troubling pattern,” recalling that a similar threat had previously been made by the Governor of Benue State.
The Obidient Movement urged Nigerians and security agencies to remain vigilant against actions capable of undermining democratic freedoms and endangering political leaders.
