Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over what he describes as an alarming descent of Nigeria’s political leadership into an “embarrassing spectacle” at a time when the country is grappling with deepening poverty, insecurity, and other crises.
In a statement, Obi lamented that despite Nigeria facing record levels of poverty, soaring infant mortality rates, millions of out-of-school children, and worsening hunger, national discourse remains dominated by trivialities. He pointed to controversies such as allegations of sexual harassment, budget padding, legislative speakership disputes, and judicial rulings that threaten stability and governance.
Obi criticized the actions of the three arms of government—the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary—saying their conduct has been uninspiring and detrimental to democracy. He highlighted issues such as the Executive’s alleged abuse of power in Osun State, a judicial pronouncement in Rivers State that could destabilize governance, and a scandal within the National Assembly.
He called on political leaders to refrain from interfering in sub-national governance and urged urgent reforms to stabilize the polity. Obi also warned against the reckless party defections driven by politicians seeking easier electoral manipulation.
Describing the state of governance as a “mockery” and a betrayal of public trust, he emphasized the need for leadership that prioritizes education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation over personal and political interests. He asserted that Nigeria cannot afford to be run like a reality TV show while millions suffer, stressing that only competent, compassionate, and accountable leadership can secure the nation’s future.
“A new Nigeria is possible,” he concluded.
