Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for failing to address worsening economic conditions in the country, accusing the administration of using inaccurate data to mask the harsh realities faced by Nigerians.
In a statement on Sunday, Obi referenced a campaign remark made by Tinubu in November 2022, while he was the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate. At the time, Tinubu dismissed Obi’s emphasis on economic statistics, saying, “Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.”
“Now, two years into his tenure, Nigeria is ranked among the hungriest nations in the world,” Obi stated, adding that “millions of Nigerians do not know where their next meal will come from.”
He accused the Tinubu-led government of feeding the public “wrong statistics,” citing alleged inconsistencies in official unemployment, inflation, and GDP data.
“Governance is not rocket science or a gamble,” Obi said. “It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
The Labour Party leader urged for a more transparent and people-focused approach to governance, warning that the disconnect between government claims and the lived experiences of citizens continues to deepen public distrust.
