Former President Goodluck Jonathan has accused former United States President Barack Obama of meddling in Nigeria’s 2015 general election to ensure his defeat.
Jonathan makes the claim in his new memoir, My Transition Hours, which is set for public presentation on Tuesday. In the book, the former president alleges that Obama showed “an unusual level of bias” against his administration during the election period.
He cited a March 23, 2015 video message by Obama addressed directly to Nigerians, which he described as “overbearing” and “condescending.” According to Jonathan, the message “all but told Nigerians how to vote” by urging citizens to “open the next chapter” through their ballots.
Jonathan’s fresh claims revisit lingering controversies surrounding foreign influence in the 2015 election that brought Muhammadu Buhari to power.
