The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has paid a working visit to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Nonwa, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he charged corps members to embrace unity and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Worlu, who was warmly received with a colourful guard of honour by the corps members, recounted his personal NYSC experience at Kubwa Camp in Abuja 25 years ago, describing the honour accorded him as deeply humbling.
In his address, he urged the corps members to uphold the founding ideals of the NYSC scheme, which he said include fostering national unity and understanding. “In every part of Nigeria, corps members should see themselves as brothers and sisters and not discriminate against anyone,” he stated.
Worlu encouraged the corps members to prepare themselves for the future and take ownership of solving Nigeria’s challenges. “We cannot call people from Singapore or America to solve our problems. It is you and I who can solve them,” he stressed.
In a show of support, the Chairman donated 100 bags of rice to the NYSC Orientation Camp, a gesture that was met with loud cheers from the corps members.
The Rivers State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Moses Oleghe, commended Worlu’s visit, describing it as inspiring and impactful. He assured that corps members of Batch B Stream II would uphold the values of unity, service, and development.
On behalf of her colleagues, Miss Didia Shulamite, a corps member, delivered a vote of thanks, praising the Chairman’s encouragement and generosity. “Your story is a great inspiration to us. You have reminded us that service to humanity is the highest calling,” she said.
