The Benin Traditional Council has imposed sanctions on a palace queen, chiefs, and other staff following the unauthorized visit of social media influencer, Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, to the Benin Palace.
In a statement issued by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council said the incident, which occurred on March 6, 2026, violated established palace protocols and desecrated the sacred premises.
The council disclosed that a palace staff member, Mr. Omuemu, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force and will be prosecuted for allegedly aiding the unauthorized entry and causing a breach of peace.
It further revealed that a chief linked to the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while the palace queen involved is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings in line with Benin customs, which could lead to her removal from the palace.
According to the statement, Adelaja and his entourage gained access to the palace without official approval, and their actions resulted in embarrassment and disruption within the palace grounds.
Describing the development as serious, the council stressed that the palace is a sacred institution governed by longstanding traditions and not a venue for casual or entertainment activities.
The council added that although Adelaja was invited to appear before a panel of chiefs investigating the matter, he failed to honour the invitation. He has now been directed to submit a formal written apology for his actions or risk facing legal consequences
