The Federal Government has ruled out plans to introduce tolling on the rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, according to the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi.
Umahi made this known on Sunday while responding to questions from journalists after inaugurating a ₦40 billion Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera Control Centre on the bridge.
He explained that installing tolling infrastructure would require construction activities that could impose additional static load on the bridge, a move he said was not advisable. The minister also noted that the bridge’s location within the city makes tolling impractical, as it could create traffic congestion and other bottlenecks.
“The bridge is within the town, and tolling it would introduce many challenges. That is why we are not tolling the Third Mainland Bridge,” Umahi said.
On security, the minister stated that the Nigeria Police Force would be responsible for monitoring the bridge. He added that the 11-kilometre bridge has been equipped to ensure a rapid security response time of about five minutes.
