The legal team representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has withdrawn from his ongoing terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Kanu Agabi, former Attorney-General of the Federation and lead counsel to the IPOB leader, on Thursday informed the court of his decision to discontinue his representation. He explained that Kanu had chosen to take back the case from his lawyers.
Following Agabi’s announcement, all the other Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) involved in the matter also declared their withdrawal from the defence team.
Confirming the development, Kanu told the court that he would be representing himself for now, although he indicated that the decision could change later.
Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the session, asked whether the court should assign a lawyer to him, but Kanu declined the offer.
In his oral submission, the IPOB leader maintained that the court lacked the jurisdiction to try him on the seven-count terrorism charge brought against him by the Federal Government.
