The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to abandon any plans for an increase in electricity tariffs, warning of potential mass protests against such measures. This announcement comes amid threats to disrupt telecommunications services if companies do not adhere to a previously agreed 35 percent tariff hike, as opposed to the 50 percent increase authorized by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).
In a statement released following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, the NLC expressed strong opposition to the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) current reclassification of electricity consumers.
The group accused NERC of attempting to forcibly transition consumers from lower tariff bands to higher ones under the pretense of service improvements, which they argue amounts to unjustified financial burdens on citizens.
