The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the repeated arrests and prolonged detentions of civil rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, describing the actions as an attack on democratic freedoms and rule of law.
In a press statement signed by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NLC decried what it called the “unending harassment” of Sowore, raising alarm over reports that he may have been injured during his most recent arrest.
“If Sowore has committed any offence, the appropriate and legal channel is through the courts,” the statement read. “Resorting to arbitrary detention is not only unlawful but also sets a dangerous precedent.”
The NLC emphasized that freedom of speech and association are constitutional rights that must be upheld by all, including the government. The Congress warned that continued silence in the face of such repression would amount to complicity, stating that arbitrary actions against activists pose a threat to journalists, unionists, and ordinary citizens alike.
“It soils the image of the government before its citizens and the international community when it behaves in a way that suggests it is above the law,” the statement continued.
Calling Sowore a “moral compass” in Nigeria’s democratic journey, the NLC demanded his immediate and unconditional release, an end to the intimidation of dissenting voices, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
“Nigeria must not slide back into the dark era of dictatorship,” the NLC warned, reaffirming its solidarity with all victims of state repression and its commitment to defending civil liberties.
