The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced that Nigerians will now be required to pay a mandatory $80 customs duty, or its naira equivalent, on every package sent to the United States.
In a circular issued on Friday, NIPOST said the policy takes effect from August 29, 2025, noting that letters and documents are exempted from the new charge.
According to the agency, the directive is in line with a recent U.S. Executive Order suspending de minimis exemptions for all postal shipments globally.
“With effect from August 29, 2025, and in compliance with the Executive Order, all postal items to the United States, except for letters and documents, will now attract a prepaid customs duty of USD $80 (or its naira equivalent) at the point of acceptance in Nigeria,” the circular stated.
NIPOST added that the development is already affecting global logistics, as airlines and cargo carriers adopt stricter measures for US-bound shipments. This, it warned, could cause delays in transit and processing, with all items subject to customs checks upon arrival in the U.S.
The agency said it is engaging with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and airline partners to reduce disruptions and protect customer experience.
