The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has urged Nigerians not to pay money to any of its officials for their National Identity Number.

The commission which stated this in a Tweet on its official handle yesterday, asked Nigerians to report such cases via actu@nimc.gov.ng or call 08157691214 or 08157691071, as anyone found culpable risk a 7-year jail term.

It noted that the prosecution and punishment of officials will serve as deterrent to others.

“The punishment for extortion if convicted is seven years of imprisonment as stipulated in Sections 14, 20 and 21 of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) Act and Sections 10 and 12 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act,” the tweet read.
