Nigeria has entered a new agreement with the United Kingdom, enabling Britain to deport thousands of failed asylum seekers, criminals, and visa overstayers to the West African nation.
The deal was signed by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, and Shabana Mahmood, UK Home Secretary, during President Bola Tinubu’s two-day state visit to the UK, which took place Wednesday and Thursday, the Home Office announced on Thursday.
The agreement grants the UK significant flexibility in deportations and, for the first time, allows Nigeria to accept undocumented deportees using UK-issued letters—alternative identification documents for individuals without valid passports—facilitating their return.
