The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called on state governments to strengthen their State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) to activate contingency plans and flood preparedness measures.
NEMA Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, made the appeal in Abuja on Friday following alerts of rising water levels upstream of the River Niger in the Republic of Benin.
She also directed all NEMA field offices covering communities along the River Niger to intensify advocacy and mobilisation, while advising residents in high-risk flood plains to evacuate to safer, higher grounds.
