The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed officials to 15 high-risk states to raise awareness among residents about the dangers of impending floods and the urgent need to relocate from flood-prone areas.
The agency disclosed this in the wake of a devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, which claimed over 200 lives and left hundreds missing. NEMA attributed the high casualty rate to residents living in gully-prone areas despite prior warnings.
According to Manzo Ezekiel, Head of the Press Unit at NEMA, the affected states include Kogi, Imo, Enugu, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Zamfara, Katsina, and the Federal Capital Territory, among others.
Ezekiel expressed concern over the continued habitation of vulnerable areas, noting that many victims of the May 23 disaster had built their homes in areas highly susceptible to flooding.
