The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has unveiled plans for the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival, aimed at reducing crime and creating career opportunities for youths in the region.
Speaking at the NDDC headquarters during a presentation by the festival planning committee, Alabo Boma Iyaye, NDDC’s Executive Director of Finance and Administration and chairman of the Festival Planning Committee, highlighted the importance of the initiative.
He said the festival will curb crime and provide opportunities for youths to build their careers and also foster unity and offer a platform for grassroots talents to shine.
Scheduled for April 1 to April 9, 2025, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the event will coincide with the NDDC’s 25th anniversary celebrations. In addition to sports competitions, the festival will showcase music, comedy, and entertainment.
Iyaye emphasized that the initiative is a long-term investment in youth and sports development, aiming to establish an annual sporting event to nurture talent and position the region as a key player in Nigerian sports.
