The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), on Wednesday, commemorated its 25th anniversary with a vibrant arts and culture parade through the streets of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The parade, which showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Niger Delta, featured contingents from the nine states under the NDDC’s mandate—Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers. Participants adorned in traditional attire and accompanied by elaborately decorated carnival floats, marched from the Port Harcourt Polo Club in GRA, through Stadium Road, and converged at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium.
Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, said the parade was aimed at promoting unity and strengthening relationships among the people of the region.
“We are here today to foster conviviality among ourselves as Niger Deltans,” Ogbuku stated. “This celebration is about bonding, networking, and building lasting relationships among people who may be meeting for the first time.”
He also expressed gratitude for the favourable weather that allowed the outdoor event to proceed smoothly, urging attendees to relax and enjoy the cultural displays.
The event is one of several activities lined up to mark the commission’s silver jubilee.
