The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has called for enhanced collaboration between the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and state governments to harness the region’s untapped blue economy potential.
Speaking during the Commission’s 25th anniversary in Port Harcourt, Ibas emphasized the need to align development efforts, avoid duplication of projects, and focus on strategic investments that drive inclusive growth.
“As the host of the NDDC headquarters and a principal stakeholder, Rivers State values its partnership with the Commission,” he said. “We must deepen our collaboration to ensure our people enjoy the full benefits of available resources.”
Ibas urged the NDDC to expand support beyond physical infrastructure to include sports development, skill acquisition centres, and blue economy initiatives—such as marine transport, fisheries, and coastal tourism.
“By investing in the blue economy, the Niger Delta can become a major contributor to Nigeria’s ambition of achieving a $1 trillion economy. We must shift from just roads and bridges to sustainable economic ventures,” he added.
He aligned the call with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that the future lies in diversification and innovation.
The NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, said the Commission is already taking steps to revive key abandoned projects, including the 27km Ogbia-Nembe Road, while resolving legacy staff and administrative issues.
The event concluded with a call for political stability, transparent project execution, and stronger partnerships to drive the Niger Delta’s development forward.
