The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, has called for urgent and collective action to protect the Niger Delta environment from pollution and the impacts of climate change.
Ogbuku, who was represented by the Executive Director of Projects, Dr. Victor Antai, made the call during the TED Countdown Anchor Event held in Port Harcourt. He noted that while the region is blessed with abundant natural resources, it continues to suffer from severe environmental degradation that hampers sustainable development.
According to him, innovative and sustainable solutions are required to transform the region and drive inclusive growth in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Dr. Antai reaffirmed the NDDC’s commitment to climate action through several key initiatives, including the “Light Up the Niger Delta” solar-powered streetlight project, shore protection, land reclamation, and mangrove conservation efforts.
He explained that these interventions promote clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Antai also urged stakeholders across the public and private sectors to join hands in turning the region’s environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable progress.
