The Niger Delta Development Commission has reached 95 per cent readiness to host the 2026 Niger Delta Sports Festival, organisers have said.
The sporting event, themed “Beyond Oil: Harnessing Talents,” is expected to attract over 3,000 athletes and coaches in a showcase of sporting excellence, youth empowerment, and regional unity across the Niger Delta.
Activities will commence with the opening ceremony on the 20th, while the closing ceremony is scheduled for the 26th. Departure of participants is fixed for the 27th after the conclusion of competitions.
Chairman of the festival planning committee, Alabo Boma Iyaye, disclosed the level of preparedness during a press briefing held on February 17, 2026, noting that facilities, logistics, and game arrangements are on track for a successful outing.
According to the organisers, the festival is designed to promote sports development and help discover talents beyond the region’s traditional oil-based economy.
