The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has released nine practical tips to help subscribers manage mobile data more efficiently amid growing complaints of alleged “data siphoning” by telecom operators.
While both the Commission and service providers have repeatedly dismissed claims of arbitrary data deductions, NCC said rapid technological changes and hidden smartphone features often contribute to unintentional high data usage. This, it noted, fuels consumer frustration and distrust in the telecom sector.
In a public advisory tagged “Smart Data Management Tips,” the Commission outlined measures to curb wastage. They include: monitoring data consumption with phone trackers or third-party apps; using Wi-Fi whenever available; turning off automatic app and software updates; restricting background data for selected apps; and downloading media for offline use.
Other tips are enabling data caching, disabling GPS and location services when unnecessary, activating data-saving modes on devices, and maximizing data rollover options to carry unused data into the next billing cycle.
NCC urged Nigerians to adopt these practices to reduce excessive consumption and extend the value of their data plans.
