The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has attributed the recurring collapses of Nigeria’s national grid to its outdated and deteriorating state.
During a budget defence session with the Senate Committee on Power on Monday, Adelabu revealed that the government is grappling with the challenges of maintaining the inherited grid.
He clarified that the grid experienced eight collapses in 2024, contrary to reports of 12 incidents. Of these, three were partial collapses due to generation issues, while five were full collapses.
Adelabu emphasized the urgency of addressing the grid’s condition, stating, “We are doing our best to manage the old and dilapidated grid until permanent solutions are implemented.” He highlighted the Presidential Power Initiative as a key effort to overhaul the system and prevent further issues, including vandalism.
Additionally, Adelabu noted that Nigeria’s power generation saw a 34% increase in 2024.
