The Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitution Review has endorsed the creation of an additional state in Nigeria’s South-East region.
In a statement issued by the committee’s media unit, the decision was reached on Saturday during a two-day retreat held in Lagos, where lawmakers considered 55 proposals for new states across the country.
The session was chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and co-chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu. After deliberations, the committee resolved that the Federal Government should establish another state in the South-East “in the spirit of fairness and equity.”
Kalu, a leading advocate for the proposal, said the move would ensure that the South-East enjoys a sense of inclusion and balance in Nigeria’s federal structure.
If approved, the new state would bring the South-East in line with other geo-political zone.
