The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has warned that Nigeria may be headed for another nationwide shutdown of medical services as a result of the Federal Government’s failure to implement a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached with the association.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, titled “Urgent Appeal to Avert a Looming Nationwide NARD Strike (TICS 2.0),” the Secretary-General of NARD, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, appealed to senior medical practitioners and respected elders to intervene, warning that the country was on the verge of a total and indefinite strike by resident doctors.
According to the association, repeated deadlines for the implementation of the MoU have been ignored by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Government, making industrial action increasingly unavoidable.
NARD recalled that it had suspended an earlier indefinite strike on November 29, after 29 days of nationwide action, following the signing of the MoU with the government. The association, however, expressed concern that the failure to honour the agreement could trigger another round of widespread disruption to healthcare services across the country.
