The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to enforce the ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small bottles (below 200ml) by December 2025.
In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said the move, backed by the Federal Ministry of Health, aims to protect children, adolescents, and young adults from alcohol misuse, which contributes to addiction, domestic violence, and road accidents.
NAFDAC explained that the decision follows a 2018 agreement with stakeholders to phase out the products, with the deadline extended to allow industries to adjust production lines.
Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye described the policy as protective, not punitive, saying it is rooted in scientific and public health evidence. She urged full compliance, warning that no further extension will be granted.
The agency added that only spirit drinks in sachets and bottles below 200ml are affected and promised to intensify public sensitisation on the dangers of alcohol misuse.
