The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully seized a large consignment of expired frozen fish that was illegally imported into the country via the Onne Sea Port in Rivers State.
RIWAMA in a statement said the seized goods, which had exceeded their shelf life and were deemed unfit for human consumption, were promptly confiscated as part of NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and enforce food safety regulations.
It said to ensure the proper disposal of the expired products, NAFDAC partnered with the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), under the diligent supervision of its Sole Administrator, Prince Ohia.
It added that the collaboration ensures that the disposal process is conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, preventing any potential harm to the public or the ecosystem.
Ohia assured that RIWAMA’s involvement in the disposal process would follow all regulatory guidelines to ensure a thorough and safe elimination of the expired goods, thereby preventing them from finding their way back into the market.
