The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in collaboration with Big Bull Rice producers, has uncovered large-scale sales of counterfeit rice in Port Harcourt. Raids conducted in Woji, Mile 3, and Mile 1 markets led to the seizure of over 120 fake bags of Big Bull Rice from more than ten shops.
In a statement released Thursday, NAFDAC identified a shop along the YKC axis of Woji as a major distribution hub for the fake product. Officials discovered large quantities of empty counterfeit Big Bull Rice bags, along with other brands such as Cap Rice, Stallion Rice, Tomato Rice, and Mama Pride. Equipment used for rebagging, including sewing and sealing machines, a generator, a stove, and thread, was also recovered.
A salesgirl, Ogechi Okafor, was apprehended at the scene. NAFDAC’s Rivers State Coordinator, Pharm. Emmanuel Onogwu, explained how to differentiate genuine Big Bull Rice from counterfeits, citing a distinct shiny ribbon across the threaded top, superior bag quality, and an authentic logo. He warned that rebagged rice often originates from questionable sources and may contain harmful chemicals.
The seized counterfeit rice has been transported to the NAFDAC Zonal Office for further investigation.
