The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert over the circulation of an unregistered cosmetic product, Fair Child Soap, in retail outlets across Lagos.
The agency confirmed the discovery during a routine post-market surveillance operation following a complaint about unethical marketing of skin-lightening products to minors. The soap, which is marketed specifically for children, was found to carry misleading and deceptive labeling.
At a consultative meeting with Lexmart Cosmetics Ltd., the marketer of the product, it was revealed that Fair Child Soap is imported, with plans underway for local production. However, NAFDAC stated that the product is not authorised for sale in Nigeria, nor does it meet the requirements for a valid registration.
As a result, the company has been sanctioned and ordered to immediately cease further distribution of the product.
NAFDAC is urging healthcare professionals and members of the public to report any suspected sale or use of unregistered, substandard, or falsified products. Reports can be made to the nearest NAFDAC office, by calling 0800-162-3322, or via email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
