A personnel of the Nigerian Air Force has been taken into custody following the fatal shooting of a man during an incident at NAF Harmony Estate along Eliozu Road in Port Harcourt.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, according to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama.
Sources cited by the publication identified the Air Force personnel as Oton Uba Eli, attached to the 115 Special Operations Group. He was said to have initially detained a 28-year-old dispatch rider, David Ebuka, over alleged possession of suspected hard drugs.
Tensions escalated when a man believed to be Ebuka’s superior, Joseph Iche Johnson, arrived at the scene, leading to a confrontation. During the altercation, the officer allegedly discharged his firearm, fatally hitting Johnson.
The victim was rushed to a military hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were later deposited at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Both the dispatch rider and the Air Force officer are currently in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities say efforts are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Air Force has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
