President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has revealed that his $20 billion refinery project in Lagos remains under threat from powerful interests benefiting from Nigeria’s former fuel subsidy regime.
Speaking at an investor forum in Lagos on Friday, Dangote said efforts to undermine the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Lekki are ongoing. He vowed to continue the fight to ensure the project’s success, expressing confidence in ultimately overcoming the challenges.
According to a report by international news outlet Semafor, Dangote alleged that certain groups profiting for years from subsidised oil imports are behind the resistance. He claimed these groups have actively opposed both President Bola Tinubu’s removal of petrol subsidies and the seamless operation of the refinery.
“These groups have funded resistance to the government’s reforms and are trying to sabotage the refinery,” Dangote was quoted as saying.
