Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has stated that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was made for the greater good of the state.
Speaking on Sunday at the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day held at the Ecumenical Centre, Igbogene, Yenagoa, Diri said it became necessary for someone to take the bold step, stressing that he did so on behalf of the people of Bayelsa.
It was the governor’s first public comment since he officially resigned from the PDP on October 15, 2025, ahead of his formal reception into the APC scheduled for Monday, November 3.
Diri acknowledged that the move may not sit well with everyone for now, but maintained that time would justify his intentions, which he described as selfless and geared toward the development of the state.
He expressed satisfaction with the presence of political leaders across party lines at the thanksgiving service, noting that Bayelsa’s unity remains paramount to its progress.
According to him, politics should be driven by development rather than conflict, and his administration will continue to promote peace, unity, and growth.
The governor also pointed to the prevailing peace, improved security, and ongoing development initiatives as reasons for gratitude, urging citizens to embrace a continuous spirit of thanksgiving.
