A military airstrike has reportedly killed several people after striking a crowded market in Jilli village along the border between Borno and Yobe states on Saturday evening.
The strike, which hit the popular Jilli Market located between Gubio and Geidam areas, caused widespread panic as explosions ripped through the busy trading centre during peak hours.
A local councillor, Lawan Zannah, confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that more than 30 people were feared dead, while over 20 others sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the airstrike occurred around 4:00 p.m. while traders and residents were actively engaged in business activities. Several fighter jets were reportedly involved in the operation.
Sources suggested that the operation may have been targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents believed to have gathered in the area. However, the bombs reportedly struck the crowded market instead, resulting in heavy civilian casualties.
