Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has dismissed reports alleging his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing them as false and malicious.
In a statement on Sunday, Kyari said he had received a barrage of calls from concerned family and friends following an online publication claiming he was in EFCC custody. He condemned the report as a “calculated attempt” to mislead the public and cause undue panic.
“This is clear mischief and a calculated attempt by the newspaper and its sponsors to achieve a desired outcome, which only they know,” he said.
Kyari, whose tenure as GCEO ended with the recent dissolution of the NNPCL board and management, stated that he is currently taking a well-deserved rest after 34 years of service, including nearly six years in top executive leadership.
He affirmed his readiness to respond to any lawful inquiries regarding his time in office, emphasizing his commitment to accountability. “I served with the fear of God, knowing that if I do not account before man, I will account before Allah,” he said.
Warning against the dangers of disinformation, Kyari urged media organizations to verify their reports to avoid misleading the public and jeopardizing investor confidence.
He also thanked friends and family for their support, reiterating that he is not in custody and remains available for any legitimate clarifications.
