The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a trader following a dispute at a fruit market in Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi area of Port Harcourt on Saturday morning.
According to a press release issued by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m. on February 14, 2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim, identified as Higightor Wenem, 30, from Mbagel Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, had asked a wheelbarrow pusher, Zakara Afaaruwu, to move his wheelbarrow to create space for goods at the market. Police said the request was refused, leading to an argument between both men.
During the altercation, the wheelbarrow pusher allegedly stabbed the trader with a dagger. The victim was rushed to a military hospital for treatment but was confirmed dead by a doctor. His remains have been deposited in the morgue for autopsy.
The Command noted that the incident triggered tension between members of the Hausa and Benue communities around the market, causing panic in the area. Police operatives, however, intervened promptly and restored calm, preventing further breakdown of law and order.
The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody while the investigation continues. Police authorities said the situation is under control and assured residents of continued efforts to maintain peace and security.
