The Rivers State Chapter of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, has threatened to shutdown waterways in the state, if eight persons allegedly kidnapped along the Kula-Abonnema route are not released in no time.

Chairman of the union in the state, Jonah Jumbo disclosed this in a statement, shortly after the incident on Monday.

He said the union would embark on a statewide strike to force the government and relevant security agencies to ensure the release of the abducted persons.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, Rowland Sekibo who confirmed and condemned the incident yesterday, described it as barbaric.

Sekibo, in a statement said though it is alleged that eight persons were abducted, the actual number is still unknown.

He noted that one person escaped, and that the council in collaboration with security agencies are working to ensure the timely release of the victims.
