A State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, has ordered the Federal Government and the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed to pay the sum of N20 million to the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Uche Secondus as compensation for defamation.
Secondus, had dragged both parties to court, for defamation of character following his inclusion on a list of alleged looters of the nation’s treasury in 2018.
Justice Adama Laminkara, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, delivered the judgement during a virtual Court sitting on Thursday.
She said, the National Chairman of the main opposition party successfully proved his case beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge, also gave an order of injunction restraining the defendants whether by themselves, agents or privies from further publishing defamatory statements against the claimant.
Secondus, had immediately after the publication of the list in 2018, threatened legal action, if it was not retracted and the sum of N1.5 billion paid to him as compensation.
But Lai Mohammed ignored him and maintained that he stole the nation’s treasury and deserved to be on the list.
