The Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly says it is not expecting any Caretaker list from the Governor, Sim Fubara.
Amaewhule made this known while addressing a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday.
According to him, the Nigerian Constitution, stipulates that Local Government Councils must be administered by democratically elected officials, and stressed the need to obey the laws
Citing Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), Rt. Hon. Amaewhule declared that any attempt to appoint caretaker committees for the Local Government Councils in the State would be deemed unconstitutional and a deviation from democratic norms; adding that the Constitution only guarantees a Local Government System governed by democratically elected officials..
“The practice of appointing caretaker committees undermines the democratic process, and it is an aberration. We, as representatives of the people, stand firm in upholding the rule of law, ensuring that governance at the local level remains in the hands of elected officials” Rt Hon. Amaewhule maintained,” he said.
