The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) says results from Saturday’s local government elections will be announced at polling centres, but no official declaration of winners will be made there.
Chairman of the Commission, Michael Odey, stated this during a media chat with journalists on Thursday. He explained that the decision was to ensure that only candidates who meet all legal and electoral requirements are declared winners.
According to him, a candidate must not only secure the highest number of votes but also obtain at least 50 percent of the votes in one-third of the local government areas to be declared elected.
Odey further disclosed that ad-hoc staff have undergone professional training to effectively conduct the elections, describing them as “RSIEC ambassadors on the field.”
He assured that the Commission is fully prepared to deliver a free, fair, and credible election without fear or favour.
