A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned hearing until October 8, 2025, to begin accelerated proceedings in a suit challenging the legitimacy of the recent local government council elections in the state.
The case was instituted by Dagogo Fubara, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate for Bonny Local Government Area, alongside 19 others, who are seeking judicial interpretation on the authentic leadership of the APC in Rivers State between Emeka Beke and Tony Okocha.
The plaintiffs, drawn from the Beke-led faction of the party, are contesting the primaries conducted by the Okocha-led camp, which produced candidates that have already been declared winners in 20 local government areas. They are also asking the court to nullify those primaries and direct the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to recognise them as the duly elected winners of the August 30, 2025 council elections.
Justice Sika Aprioku is presiding over the matter, with RSIEC joined as one of the respondents in the suit.
