Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that fewer than 30% of Nigerians pay taxes to the federal government, despite high expectations for infrastructure, education, security, and other public services.
Akpabio made this statement on Monday while opening a public hearing on tax reform bills submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu on October 3, 2024. He stressed the need for tax reforms, warning that the country cannot afford to repeat past mistakes without implementing meaningful changes.
He assured that once the bills are passed, the National Assembly will strengthen its oversight to ensure proper resource management. Akpabio also urged Nigerians to participate in the legislative process rather than relying on social media narratives.
