The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the killing of Bright Nda Owhor, a member of its Port Harcourt Branch, who was reportedly murdered on Sunday night in Rivers State.
In a statement issued by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), the NBA described Owhor as a promising young lawyer whose life was cut short in a “senseless and brutal” attack. The association expressed deep sorrow over his death and demanded swift justice.
“The Nigerian Bar Association is outraged by this tragic incident. It is a painful loss not just to his family and colleagues but to the entire legal community,” Osigwe said.
The NBA called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, and other security agencies to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. It insisted that the killers be apprehended and prosecuted without delay.
“No society governed by law can allow such impunity to persist. The right to life must be protected, and those who violate it must face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.
The association also urged the government to address the rising insecurity across the country, stressing that legal practitioners cannot continue to serve under the constant threat of violence.
While pledging to monitor the case closely, the NBA extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, the Port Harcourt Branch, and the wider legal fraternity.
“Justice must not only be done but be seen to be done — and swiftly,” Osigwe concluded.
