A human rights lawyer, Henry Peter Ekine, has called for the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, over alleged electoral offences.
Ekine, in a statement, said Okocha’s alleged voluntary public confession to electoral crime, fraud, abuse of office, and corruption raises serious concerns about his suitability for public office. He described the APC chairman as a threat to democracy, insisting that such conduct undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
The lawyer further urged relevant authorities to ensure that Okocha and his alleged collaborators are thoroughly investigated and brought to justice in accordance with the law.
In addition to legal action, Ekine called for Okocha’s immediate removal from all public positions. He specifically demanded that Okocha be relieved of his role as Rivers State representative on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission.
He also called for Okocha’s removal as APC chairman in Rivers State, as well as the withdrawal of the Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State (DSSRS) award conferred on him.
Ekine maintained that holding individuals accountable for electoral misconduct is essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and restoring public trust in governance.
