The Member representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency II in the House of Representatives, Barr. Blessing Chigeru Amadi, DSSRS, has sponsored a bill seeking the establishment of the Federal College of Orthopedic Technology and Therapy in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The proposed legislation, which has passed its first reading on the floor of the House, is aimed at providing a legal framework for the training of orthopedic technologists and therapists to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in orthopedic care across Nigeria.
While presenting the bill, Barr. Amadi highlighted that the institution would serve as a center of excellence for orthopedic education, research, and innovation in the South-South region. She explained that the college would not only enhance specialized healthcare delivery but also create employment opportunities and strengthen human capacity in the medical sector.
The lawmaker expressed confidence that the bill would enjoy wide support from her colleagues, given its importance to national healthcare development and human capital advancement.
Following its successful first reading, the bill now proceeds to the second reading stage, where lawmakers will deliberate on its general principles before further legislative consideration.
