Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the state will host the E1 Championship, the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series, on October 4 and 5, 2025 — making Lagos the first African city to host the event.
Sanwo-Olu made the announcement after attending the E1 Championship in Monaco over the weekend, describing the experience as a demonstration of how “innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking.”
“This is a major milestone for the sport and for what it says about our city. It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” the governor stated.
He noted that the championship would provide a platform to showcase the culture, energy, and people of Lagos to a global audience, while reinforcing the city’s position as a hub for innovation and tourism.
Sanwo-Olu also expressed appreciation to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for supporting the initiative and investing in Team Drogba, saying their commitment reflects confidence in Lagos’ vision.
“We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores. We’re opening a new chapter for Lagos, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer,” he added.
