A health practitioner based in Port Harcourt, Nancy David, has raised an alarm over hygiene practices at local swimming pools.
David recounted her recent experience at a facility, stating that she and her friends were required to shower thoroughly outside the pool before entering. “Our cream, sweat, perfume, and other substances needed to be washed off. As a healthcare practitioner, I understood that protocol,” she said, noting that such measures help prevent the transmission of infections to swimmers.
However, she questioned the frequency of chlorine treatment in the pools. “Chlorine kills germs, but how often is it applied?” she asked. David further highlighted an alarming trend: “The way ladies rush to my shop to buy sanitary pads after swimming is concerning. Why would you enter the pool when you are not completely free of contaminants?”
She called on pool owners to take urgent action. “Owners of swimming pools should delegate someone to check ladies before they enter the pool. Most people unknowingly contract infections from swimming pools, which can be prevented with proper treatment and preventive measures,” she emphasized.
David concluded by stressing the importance of public health. “Health for all is what we crave. It is up to us to make this world a better place to live in—a place free of germs and diseases,” she said
